HMS Weekly Update 9/3/17

From the Principal's Desk
Hello Parents,
Can you believe it is September already?  The school year is rapidly progressing through first semester.  Before you know it Thanksgiving will be upon us.  Well, I want to say thank you for a great beginning to the school year.  It has been a smooth transition thus far and the students have been wonderful.  Also, I am quite pleased with the administration of the MAP Assessment. The results will be distributed by team teachers within a few weeks.  The testing cycle ends September 14th and the results will be sent home by September 21st.  Also, our first parent conference night of the school year is September 21st.  Parents may contact the counseling office at (678) 874-2932 to set up an appointment or send an email directly to your child's teacher.
On another note, I want to inform you about an HMS Student Council Outreach Effort that will culminate on September 8th.  Due to the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey, Henderson Middle School is collaborating with the Atlanta Organization, On My Mother's Shoulders, to collect toiletries to be sent for hurricane relief in the Houston, Texas area.  Students and parents may donate toiletries, pre-packaged clothing items (i.e.: socks, t-shirts, underwear, etc.) and baby items.  Please bring in all items by Friday, September 8th and drop the items off in the front lobby of the school.  Again, this outreach effort is being sponsored by the HMS Student Council.

Curriculum Night - September 19th, 6pm
Media Center
The Curriculum Night presentation outlines the performance standards set forth by the Georgia Department of Education.  Presenters will outline the course requirements for students (i.e. 4 core classes, 1 extended learning time or world language class, phys. ed, and a Connections class).  Curriculum Night provides more generalized information than Team Night. Teachers will not be on hand at this meeting.  Specific concerns, such as individual grades, may be discussed during the first parent conference night, which is scheduled for September 21st
8th Grade PSAT
The 2017 PSAT Assessment will be administered on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 to all 8th grade students.  The fee to take the 8th grade test has been waived to all students.  DCSD will pay for all 8th grade students to take the PSAT 8/9.  Every middle school will administer the PSAT on October 11, 2017

If you would not like your child to participate in the assessment, please provide a written letter addressed to the school principal indicating your decision to opt-out of the PSAT administration.  Although the written letter will be addressed to the school principal, the letter will be collected by the counseling department.  If the counseling department does not receive a written letter from a parent, their child will participate in the assessment.

Calling All Student Artists!

This year's theme is "Within Reach."
Students should express this theme however they see fit in any of these six categories:  Visual Arts, Photography, Literature, Musical Composition, Videography, and Dance Choreography.  Multiple entries are allowed. Visit the Georgia PTSA Reflections website for rules and instructions.
The deadline for submission is 4PM Monday October 2nd.  Please contact Kathy Malloy with any questions.

Lakeside Cluster Summit Meeting
The first Lakeside Cluster Summit meeting of this school year is taking place Thursday, Sept 14th at 6:30pm at Henderson Middle School.  More detailed information and an Agenda will follow next week.
The Lakeside Cluster Summit was formed in January 2016 to encourage collaboration of all the schools within the Lakeside Cluster.  These meetings are a way School Leaders (Principals, PTA Presidents, School Council Chairs), and District Leaders (Regional Superintendent, and Board of Education Members), within the Lakeside Cluster, can come together to share information and help solve problems affecting us all.
Last year, the LCS (Lakeside Cluster Summit) focused on SPLOST/Facility Repairs, Diversity/Tolerance, and the Lakeside HS addition.  This year we will be continuing these agenda items and also focus our attention on improving communication and collaboration between all the Lakeside Cluster feeder schools.

Henderson Hero 2017

We Need a Hero!

We're asking everyone to be a Henderson Hero and contribute to the PTSA Fund for the year.

No Sales. No Pledges. No Hassles.

In previous years, PTSA funding has come from one big Magazine Sale each fall.  This takes a lot of work from students and parents. Only a portion of the profits come back to HMS.

$40 per student is all it takes.  That's the suggested contribution, but all donations are greatly appreciated.  We'll gladly accept more. Please give as you are able.

100% of the donations go directly to fund PTSA here at HMS!

We need you and thank you for your support!

Things your heroic contribution will fund:

  • Copy Paper for all teachers
  • School-wide events, such as Family Picnic and Ice Cream Party
  • Honors day awards
  • Field trips for all HMS teams
  • Cultural arts programs for all students
  • Teacher appreciation, conference meals, and hospitality
  • Enhance HMS technology

just to name a few!

Severe Weather Information

Severe Weather Conditions Procedures and Communication Plan
The safety of students, personnel, and volunteers is paramount to Henderson Middle School during times of severe weather conditions.   Emergency protocols have been established by DCSD and distributed throughout all schools within DeKalb.  If there is a sudden severe weather alert, such as a tornado warning, students and teachers will assume the safety positions within the designated areas of  the school.  Top priority will be given to the safe evacuation of any instructional trailers on school property.

Parents:  Steps to take so you are informed during such emergencies:
  • Tune to local news broadcasts to receive the most current information about changing weather conditions.
  • Sign up for the Remind text alerts from Ms. Patillo today. Do it before a weather emergency hits. Here are directions for Remind alerts:
To receive messages via text:
text  @fkhec to 81010. You can opt-out of messages at anytime by replying:  'unsubscribe @2bc392'.
Trouble using 81010?
Try texting:   @fkhec to (678) 256-2458 instead.
  • Download the DeKalb County School District Mobile App from   This will give you updated information from the County in an expedient manner.  Be sure to go into the app and follow Henderson Middle School.
  • Monitor the DeKalb County School District Website for the latest information about weather conditions, school closings, early or late dismissal times, extra-curricular activities, and any other timely information.
  • PTSA may also send out information via eblast. Please forward this email to anyone who might not be on our list.
  • Parents may call the front office and/or attendance office with questions, however, communication emanating from the aforementioned offices may be limited in order to keep all personnel safe within the building.  The telephone number of the front office is (678) 874-2902 and the telephone number to the attendance office is (678) 874-2919.
In the event of extreme weather conditions students will shelter in place and the school offices will be closed for check-out until an "All Clear" is given by the Central Office of the DeKalb County School District.  Once the severe weather alert is over, the principal or designee will send out a text message through the Remind system to inform parents of the "All Clear" and the restoration of normal operating procedures.
